Note:

This was the design submitted by John Roettiers to the competition held in 1662. Thomas Simon was unable to prepare a design in time but produced his Petition crown the following year in an attempt to reverse the King’s decision to appoint Roettiers as engraver. Roettiers did not sign his entry but his monogram appears as ‘an extra curl’ on certain crowns of 1662 and 1663. This appears to be a new piece to the market. The type was represented in the Lingford, Wakley and Cooper cabinets but it is considerably rarer than the famous Petition crown. The Mackerell specimen was acquired by the British Museum in 1905
