Private Thomas Virtue, service number 19037, served in the Border Regiment, often referred to as the “Lonsdale Battalion”during the First World War. Records confirm he joined at the age of 22 and he was killed in action on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Although Private Virtue has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Thiepval Memorial in France. This memorial stands as a tribute to those soldiers who fell in battle and remain missing, ensuring their bravery and sacrifice are never forgotten
