Lot 72

Victoria (1837-1901)

Penny, 1858, young head left, date below, 8 over 2 in date, rev. Britannia seated, (S.3948). Nearly extremely fine

Note: This variety was previously thought to be 8 over 3. Die cracks show thinly through the bottom of all four digits of the date indicating an earlier stage of the die break associated with this type. Recent research suggests that this die only had a short working life; it was an 1852 die that was converted to 1858

Estimate: 70 £ - 90 £
